You NEED to do THIS before UPGRADING to DaVinci Resolve 18

What’s going on everyone! Today we are going to go over what you need to do BEFORE upgrading to DaVinci Resolve 18. If you’re a working professional using Resolve and you are afraid to download a Beta, here is what you need to do.

First of all, there’s a lot that we hate about premiere pro. That’s why people switch to Resolve. But what’s amazing about Adobe is they allow you to have multiple versions of their software on your machine so you can switch back to an old version if you need to. That’s not the case with Resolve. Once you upgrade, you lose the current version. But more importantly, this is what you need to do before you start Resolve.

When you first open Resolve 18, here is the screen that you see.

Where are the projects? Click on the submenu opener, and it’ll open your databases.

When you look at it, it’s showing your DR17 database, but look at the message when you click on it.

DON’T DO THIS. Once you do it, you lose it. It’s not backwards compatible. If you have pressing projects you are doing right now and they need to go out ASAP and Resolve 18 doesn’t work out on your machine, you will be screwed.

So instead, what you need to do is this.

So this is the database it’s referring to. So what I am going to do is right click on it and hit duplicate.

For me, it created a copy and I renamed it to DR18 (you can see the one under it). Once that’s done, you have to do one more thing. You need to click on the add project library at the bottom.

We then want to connect (not create) to the database that we copied and renamed.

Once you give it a name, you have to locate that database within your computer.

Then once that’s done, you’ll hit connect and wait for it to do its thing.

You can see now that all my projects from Resolve 17 came through into Resolve 18. And I’m leaving my Resolve 17 database intact too so I can go back if needed.

Hopefully this video was helpful. Don’t be scared to upgrade!
