Best Budget 4k TV in 2020? | LG NanoCell 86NANO90

Today I am going to be reviewing a product from a professional colorist's point of view. LG sent me this NanoCell 86” 4K TV and I am going to give my honest thoughts on this. These are the topics we are going to be covering

I think these are the most essential things you think about when buying a TV, so let’s just jump right in.

We are going to start with size. I picked size first because this is for a living room where the size of the TV matters. You want that theater feel.

However, usually size will come at a really steep cost. Which is why I wanted to discuss the price next. How expensive is it going to be? This one, for an 86”, is only $2800 (at the time of recording this video).

This is a monster of a TV that has all the bells and whistles of the pro TVs, and it’s less than $3000. That’s crazy.

Moving onto the next point, picture quality. One of the best parts when it comes to picture quality, is the filmmaker mode.

This is so color accurate, it is only just a hair less accurate than my pro equipment. The only thing I would say is that there is a bit more contrast in the TV, and the lower mids are desaturated a bit. But to someone who doesn’t do this for a living as long as I have, you won’t notice the difference. Also, yes, when I watch Zodiac (shot in 1080p), the upscaler on this TV is amazing. So when I talk about picture quality know that I look for these three things:

I prefer something that has a little better contrast over color accuracy, which is why I sold my Flanders scientific and got the OLED. After calibration, I was getting much better results and even clients were happier. One thing I do recommend if you buy this is to turn off all the auto assist features/AI mode. Now a site to go to is rtings.com because they will give you color calibrated picture profile settings that you can follow.

You can mimic these and then dial them in for your environment.

Now I want to move into viewing angle. I can happily tell you that there is a big difference. My son would sit to the side and never once complained about any difference in picture quality. Any angle that you view this from, there are no issues I have found in my time with this TV.

Now we are going to move onto the smart features. Let's start with the first one, their remote.

The remote with their TV OS is just the best in the business. Nothing comes close. You also have preset buttons on the remote which is cool. They recently included Apple TV plus, which is awesome because I have so many films on there, and I don’t have to buy an actual apple TV, so it saves me money. Even their voice search is great, and pairs with google assistant.

Now I want to quickly sum it up. For the price point and what you are getting it’s insane. Every company has what I call “the gateway drug.” That best bang-for-buck product that they pull you in with. This is that for LG. I couldn’t give it any higher recommendations. It is the best budget 4K TV in 2020, hands down.
