The Easiest way to get Real-Time Playback in DaVinci Resolve | Quick Tip Tuesday

What’s going on everyone! Welcome to a shorter tutorial, starting a series called Quick Tip Tuesday. This series will be tackling tips under two minutes. Today we are going to be going over how to get real-time playback in DaVinci Resolve.

Today we aren’t focusing on the color aspect of this, only how to get real-time playback. Now my machine is a beast, so even with grain and a grade on this clip, my machine can handle it but once I add that noise reduction, my machine starts to choke.

We are close to real-time, but not there.

Now when is this a problem? It’s especially a problem when you have the client in-house. If the client is watching it on big screen, it’s distracting.

Now the way to fix this is to go under the project settings, under master settings and drop the timeline resolution from 4K to 1080p.

Now note that this is not changing the source resolution (AKA the clip resolution). All you’re doing is temporarily taking your 4K project down to 1080p. So now, once we do that, look at the playback speed.

Now, before you hit export, go back to the project settings and change it back to the resolution you want to export it in (for this example it’s 4K).

Hopefully this was helpful. I hope this helps with your workflow!
