Secrets to Color Grading Quickly | DaVinci Resolve 17 Tutorial

What’s going on everyone! Welcome to yet another amazing tutorial. This is probably the most practical video on YouTube, especially on my channel. When you are working as a colorist, your client wants to see a bunch of looks really fast. These tips can apply to any camera, any environment, etc. So let’s go ahead and get into it!

This is the shot we are going to be working with.

It’s going to be a simple 5 node tree.

On my last node, I am going to use a CST and convert it from Arri log to rec.709.

This rec.709 will be considered our first look. This is what they saw on set, so it’ll be the first look.

Now I am going to create a new version and in the first node, I am going to balance out the shot. I am going to use my printer lights to pull out red and add some blue to balance the image.

Now moving into our third node, I am going to use glow. I am going to change the composite mode to softlight and open up the shine threshold. Then I want to bring my spread down a tiny bit, and bring up the brightness some.

Now in my fourth node, I am going to use my film grain. I will keep it on 16mm but then under my advanced controls I want to take up my midtones.

Just like that we are done.

Now we are going to create a new version, reset our first node and we are going to pull down on our red channel and pull up on our blue channel. I am going for a gold look.

Then moving into our second node, I am going to use my shadows to add some more teal/green/blue into the shadows, just to add a bit of color separation into the image.

Boom, that is our third look.

Now we are going to reset our primaries and second node and create a cooler look. Starting in our first node, we are going to bring down the reds, then pull blues up a bit.

Just like that, that is our fourth look.

Now what I am going to do is pop open all of our four looks.

You pick whichever one you love, but then it gives your client a good way to pick their favorite too.

So as I already mentioned, this is a really great tool and skill to have. Your clients would love you for it and it makes you fast and helps you think outside the box. So with that, work hard, get obsessed, and get possessed.
